The violin, traditionally called the violin, is the highest of the string instruments, comparable to the soprano in singing. While the violin corresponds to the soprano in singing, the viola or viola is comparable to the alto. It is slightly larger than the violin and has a darker, warmer sound. As a second voice alongside the melody, the viola is traditionally used in chamber music or in the orchestra, but has now also established itself as an exciting solo instrument. The word viola is derived from the Italian term "viola da braccio", which means "arm violin".

The violoncello, or cello for short, is the big brother of the violin and viola in a way: it is significantly larger and sounds deeper and fuller. It is played sitting down and held between the knees. The cello is a typical ensemble and orchestral instrument, but there are also famous solo pieces.

The double bass is the deepest of the string instruments. With its full, dark sound, it shapes the rhythm and mood of a piece of music - for example in a string quartet, orchestra or jazz band. It looks like a large violin, but comes from the viola da gamba or "knee violin" family: The sloping "shoulders" of the bass and the special way in which the bow is held are still reminiscent of these historical string instruments.

The fiddle is best known from Irish and Scottish folk music as well as bluegrass and country music. However, it also plays a major role in many other European musical traditions, such as in Scandinavia, the Alpine countries, northern Spain and the Balkans. As far as the instrument and its posture are concerned, there is no difference to the classical violin, although the playing style differs considerably in some cases and is more similar to that of pop and jazz. Rhythm plays a major role, as does free playing based on existing melodies. Comprehensive harmonic basics are also acquired. The bowing and bowing technique is usually very sophisticated.

In addition to the instruments of the violin family, viols - the viole da gamba - were popular instruments until the 18th century. This family of instruments has all the parts of the register and is suitable for solo, chamber music and special ensembles. The viole da gamba is mainly used to play older music. The instrument is more suitable for advanced music students with a particular interest in this special repertoire.
