Today, the drum set is probably the best-known member of the Schlagwerk family. In its basic form, it consists of a bass drum, snare, hi-hat, tomtoms and cymbals and is indispensable in every band.

Together with other band members, such as the bassist, the drummer forms the rhythm section and provides the groove. Because when the rhythm section plays well, the listeners' feet start tapping and they feel like dancing.

Percussion is also needed in the symphony orchestra - and not just the four large timpani, which are hard to miss. In the 18th century, the bass drum, cymbals and triangle were added, and later the snare drum and xylophone.

Composers of the 20th century in particular integrated a variety of percussion instruments into their works, including tubular bells, jingles and the glockenspiel. Even car horns, whistles and rattles are used from time to time. And if you lose yourself in your thoughts while listening, you'll be back in the swing of things when the cymbals hit.

The vibraphone and the marimba are very special percussion instruments. Both resemble a giant glockenspiel - one with metal bars, the other with wooden bars.

Both instruments are played with great virtuosity, as they not only produce rhythms, but also melodies and harmonies.

Congas, bongos, timbales and maracas are among the many international percussion instruments that have become an integral part of today's musical practice.

They are extremely versatile - they are used both in elementary music practice and in concert music.
